Normally the subject of a biography has been an active participant in important occasions or has articulated unique thoughts or suggestions that were recorded in a documentary form. Barbara Heck did not leave writings or letters. Even the proof of the date her marriage was not important. It's difficult to discern the motives of Barbara Heck and her behavior through her whole life, based on original sources. In spite of this she became a legendary figure during the early days of Methodism. In this case, the job of the biographer is to provide an account of and explanation for the legend and describe if possible the real person who lies within the myth.

Abel Stevens a Methodist Historian published a piece on this incident in 1866. Barbara Heck has taken the highest spot on the New World's list of ecclesiastical leaders in the wake of Methodism. The reason for this is that the history of Barbara Heck must be predominantly based upon her contribution to the cause to which her life's work remains forever connected. Barbara Heck's involvement in the beginning of Methodism was a fortunate coincidence. Her fame is due to the fact that a effective organization or movement can honor their past in order to maintain ties to the past and feel rooted in it.
